The iPhone Headphone Mic Buttons

The iPhone iPod app is obviously great because it holds your music collection. I have got the home button set so that if I push it twice quickly it loads the iPod app, or pops up a small notification window for quick back, play/pause and skip options (you can set your home button preferences in Settings).

When I first saw the little mic on the iPhone headphones I didn’t think much of it, but then I realised that it was a button and learnt how it works. If you are listening to a lot of music you really have to plug them in and start using them.

One Click

If you push it once it will start or stop the music you are playing in the iPod app.

Two Clicks

Pushing the button twice will skip you to the next song.

Three Clicks

The triple-click will take you back to the start of the song, or play the previous song.

Ringing Phone

If the phone is ringing and you push the button it will pick up the phone, then you can push again to hang up when you are done. If it starts ringing while you are playing music it will automatically pause it and then afterwards start playing it from the same spot when you hang up. Now that’s cool.

Are there any other button tricks we should know about?

if you hold down the button it activates voice commands eg: album , next , call john ,pause heaps better than nokias voice commands (don't need to use computer accent )

    iphone 3gs 32gb

thanks for the post did not know about mic button i thought it only had 2 vol up vol down
till i read this post for the last hour ive been testing it out i accidentally pranked a few people in my phone book they should print something on that hidden button
  • Cool - doesn't work on the 3G, just the 3GS.
  • Miranda Tushaus
ugh i have it but it never works
  • Not that I know of... but I would love it if there was a way to do that.

Is there any way so that when you click the mic button it starts the music in shuffle mode? It always starts with playing the first song of my playlist and then doesn't have shuffle if I haven't previously started the music up with shuffle on the iphone itself.
  • It's also awesome how if you're listening to music and get a call it fades out, then resumes the music when the call ends. That's such a seamless experience.
  • Yeah that was a nice thing - but my new Shure's don't have any buttons and I'm surviving fine. It's not the end of the world.
  • The only thing I think the headphones miss is the ability to adjust volume. The new in-ear headphones has this, but sadly is not compatible with iPhone 3G yet....
  • Yeah, I am the same! I first dismissed it as nothing, but now I find I can't live without it! I didn't know about the triple click either, very interesting.
