Everyday Play

This is a guest post from Michelle Matthews, swing owner and founder of the Deck of Secrets.

It doesn’t matter how sophisticated and serious your world has become there are still some primal instincts that can be very easily roused. In my warehouse apartment a swing hangs from the rafters. I recently tweeted that the first thing my 80 y.o. father does when he visits is head straight for the swing.

Here are some of the comments the tweet attracted:

@swingdag: <hands you biggest grin of the morning award>
@joegreenz: Classic! Well done that man!…But don’t forget: its all good fun until someone gets hurt ;-)
@ronitoo: Who can resist that swing???
@ScottKilmartin: nice work Mr M… am a fan of the swing myself

The swing is a trigger for some people. They are drawn to it and will instantly put it to use. Triggers bypass our everyday exterior and tickle our imagination, creativity and playful side.

Who doesn’t get a thrill when the Crown Casino fire breathing towers light up and you can feel the heat from far away. Or feel a little childish delight at the sight of anything that glows in the dark.

As a reviewer of bars, restaurants and shops I’m forever looking at new places and while I can be impressed by the fruits of a bountiful budget and work of accomplished designers it isn’t so often that I am delighted and being delighted is my quest. Delight transcends expense and elitism.

On weekends I go for long runs through the suburbs hunting down small cafes and breakfast joints for my brunch guide. On these runs my friend Jo and I discover amazing things that people create to trigger something within. We’ve seen a 3 level treehouse in Northcote, watched the construction of the 16m golden Heavenly Mother Buddhist statue in Footscray, taken tea at Griggons & Orr, the brand new but operational old style corner store in North Melbourne and passed by valet parking for bicycles. When you look there are examples everywhere of people playing and creating delight. We all should. And often. It just makes life (and business) more interesting.
