Wherever we go, there is always a huge amount of meta-information around us – it’s just not visible without a medium to show it. The hardware necessary for augmented reality is finally in our hands thanks to the iPhone, the PSP, and many other new phones.
The basic concept is that the camera in the device takes a live video feed, tracks a pattern, and then applies virtual layers on top. The best way to explain it is with some videos so take a look at these:
Type 9 Hologram – this video shows how the tracking works through a matrix of dots.
World of Mountains – books don’t have to be so flat.
ARhrrrr! – kill those zombies!
NRU – activity finder
Business cards – now they are more than just a piece of cardboard
Identification – browse social profiles around the room
Pool – is this cheating?
Twitter – have a look at where those messages are coming from
Roku’s Reward – you thought World of Warcraft was cool?
What’s next?
